Ocean Centre

Jais Aben Resort's new Ocean Centre is where to go to engage in the many activities available in the pristine waters surrounding our resort.

Canoeing and Sea Kayaking
Take a canoe or kayak out for a half or full day on the water. Or even climb aboard one of our 'traditional' canoes, the outriggers from yesteryear. The islanders built this ancient watercraft for us just so you can experience the way it has always been.
 Snorkelling
Grab some snorkelling gear, jump in the boat, and head out for the best snorkelling you have ever experienced. Included are a light lunch and refreshments along with folding chairs for your private out-island experience. If you'd rather do it on your own, great reefs are within paddling distance of the resort. You can even snorkel right off the shore at Jais Aben and see many underwater wonders, including our resort symbol, the clownfish or nemo. Many of our guests have also spotted dolphins swimming close to shore.

What to Expect at Madang Lagoon
The outer perimeter of the Madang lagoon forms a mini barrier reef of steep walls with each dive site having a variety of coral structures. Within the lagoon are sheltered wrecks and patch reefs which being shallower, allow for more bottom time to appreciate a variety of smaller fish life, shrimp and nudibranchs. Our snorkeling sites are close which means minimal time in boats and plenty of time for snorkeling. Our water is warm, averaging 28 C for most of the year. As the Ocean Centre is located right on the water's edge there is no lugging of gear and our house reef means you can snorkel whenever you like.
Coastal Tours
One of our drivers will be more than happy to take you on a sea cruise for the simple pleasure of being on the water. Take superb photographs as you proceed up the coastline or into the town of Madang . A typical 2-hour cruise is complete with snacks and bar and a history lesson to boot, since the waters of the area are full of stories.
The lagoon area is an area approximately 15km long and 4km wide, starting from Madang town to the south, stretching to Alexishafen in the north, with the most eastern point being Tab Island , a spectacular snorkelling area. The outer perimeter of the lagoon consists of a series of islands connected by coral. This forms a mini barrier reef of steep walls with each area having different coral structures. At several places the outer reef has breaks or passages, allowing for greater water flow on incoming tides and thus an increase in schooling fish life. Within the lagoon are sheltered wrecks and patch reefs which being shallower, allow for more bottom time to appreciate a variety of smaller fish life, shrimp and nudibranchs.
Madang lagoon has the reputation of being one of the most ecologically diverse reef systems in the world. Within it's tiny area exists abundant reef fish packed with other marine life such as anemones, cuttlefish, featherstars, starfish, barrel sponges, gorgonian fans etc. It contains up to 1000 fish species, 800 hard and soft corals, 400 nudibranchs and 9 species of anemones.

Reef Fishing
Cruise out just offshore from the Jais Aben Resort for some fishing fun and catch a few reef fish. You can often see the locals in their traditional canoes far off in the distance for their morning fishing time. If you are adventurous, you can join them.
